'Only time will tell' on improving US-China trade

Chinese President Xi Jinping met Alaska's Governor Bill Walker as he made a surprise visit to the USA state before taking to the skies again in his Boeing 747 for the journey back to Beijing.

China is Alaska's top export market - the state sold more than $1 billion worth of goods to China past year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

"The objective of the meeting with Trump was to set the direction for China-US relations in the new era and expand pragmatic cooperation in a wide range of fields", Xi added.

Before the meeting, he took a ride on the only highway that leads south of Anchorage, a stunning coastal highway along Turnagain Arm in Cook Inlet. Fish, accounting for 58 percent.

A distant second on the export list are minerals and ores, accounting for 27 percent.

Lower-tier exports included oil, wood, scrap metal and airplane parts.

Having your largest trade partner drop in for a meeting is fortuitous when the state is in tough financial straits because of a prolonged period of low oil prices. They then set off on a short sightseeing tour of Anchorage. Alaska's economy widely relies on the offshore resources as six of the country's biggest oil fields and one of the largest gas fields are located on the territory of the state and grant it the access to 13 percent of U.S. oil and 30 percent of the country's gas resources. King Harald V of Norway also made an official visit to Anchorage a few months before Obama.

According to the reports, both the leaders will spend some private time together before sitting down for dinner in the estate's formal dining room. Their paths were crossing as one finished and one began trips to Asia.
