Atari confirms it is making a new video game console

The title of the video on YouTube calls it "a brand new Atari product" that is "years in the making".

The only detail Chesnais gave to GamesBeat was to say that the Ataribox is based on PC technology. Domain information was unavailable at the time, but it was assumed the Ataribox was not something Atari-built, but some kind of third-party project. Atari liberally licences out its classic games and the Atari Flashback 8 Gold was one of Gizmodo's picks for best hardware at this year's E3.

Would you be interested in a retro Atari console?

It is too soon to report any development on Atari's new console as Chesnais said as its still in the early stages. The video showed close up shots of what seemed like a retro console with wood paneling, quite like the legendary Atari 2600 itself.

Brand licensing has also been more of a priority, with the Atari name planned for use in the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 film. The last gaming console from Atari was the Jaguar, which debuted in 1993 and was discontinued in 1996. Meaning they started work before the NES Classic was a bandwagon to jump on.

That plan would nearly surely be suicide. Yes, the Nintendo Switch is a big hit, but it offers a simple and practical gimmick along with some quality exclusives and many more on the way. Chesnais subsequently bought the company which VentureBeat reports is now profitable.
