Hodgkinson, 66, who was shot by police at the scene and later died, was a member of a group called Terminate The Republican Party and had volunteered for the presidential campaign of Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders a year ago.

In a national address, Trump appealed for unity following the morning assault in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia, which came amid bitterly partisan political tension in the U.S. capital in the aftermath of a vitriol-filled 2016 election. The staffer who works for Williams is in good condition, the source said.

He was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition. The bullet travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding. He added that his thoughts and prayers are with Steve Scalise, Capitol Police officers and congressional staffer all injured in the shooting. Two of the wounded were Capitol Hill police, witnesses said.

He "was treated and released having sustained a minor injury during the incident", Capitol Police said in a statement.

Inside the facility, Trump sat next to Scalise's bed and spoke with his family, according to White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

Ahead of his visit, a White House official said Trump may only be able to visit Scalise's family, which has gathered at the facility, since the lawmaker himself remains critically ill.

The gunman, identified by a senior USA official as James Hodgkinson from the St. Louis suburb of Belleville, Illinois, died of his injuries.

Shortly after the shooting, Bernie Sanders, the former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, said on the Senate floor that the shooter apparently was a volunteer for his campaign past year. "That was one of the things that concerned me greatly".

"He was in the outfield", Williams said about Barth during a news conference on Wednesday.

Sanders swiftly responded to reports the suspect had volunteered on his presidential campaign.

"Let me be as clear as I can be". Sanders said he denounced the violence "in the strongest possible terms".

The shooting occurred one day before the Republican team is scheduled to play in the annual Congressional Baseball Game at Nationals Park.

Several other Republican lawmakers were also present at the time at the facility, about 13 km from the Capitol. "A member of the US Congress got shot because they didn't like (his) political views", Ryan said.

The two members of Scalise's security detail - Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey - exited their black SUV to fire back at the shooter, who was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Shortly after the shooting, Bernie Sanders, the former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, said on the Senate floor that the gunman was apparently a volunteer for his campaign past year.

When the shooting started, Rep. Trent Kelly of MS, playing on the third base side of the field, was facing the gunman and was the first target, lawmakers said.

"I heard a single large bang and I thought nothing of it".

"Members get threats on a regular basis and have trouble determining which are real", House Democratic whip Steny Hoyer told reporters.
