J&K: 1 civilian killed in clash between protesters, security forces in Shopian

According to reports and witnesses, amid sloganeering, three rounds of funeral prayers were held to accommodate mourners who had poured into the native village of the slain student to attend his funeral prayers.

More than 100 people, many students among them, have been killed in the disputed Himalayan region since July past year, when a leading militant commander was killed.

Besides student protests, intense clashes erupted between protesting youth and forces in Pulwama town amidst complete shutdown in the area.

During the funeral procession, people raised massive "pro-freedom, pro-Pakistan and anti-India" protests. He was taken to the district hospital in Shopian, where doctors declared him dead.

In retaliation, police officials said, they fired teargas shells to disperse the crowd but later resorted to firing bullets after situation went out of control.

Residents said that Adil Farooq was wounded when armed forces opened fire. In order to maintain peace and tranquility security forces deployed in the area dispersed them with maximum restraint.

Authorities have shut down schools and colleges in Shopian on Wednesday to prevent violence by students.

Meanwhile, life remained paralysed in restriction-free areas in the district due to spontaneous strike in protest against the civilian's death.

The recent "illegal" NIA raids conducted on pro-freedom activists and traders to "intimidate and defame" leadership and the freedom movement and to damage the state economy will also denounced and protested by people, they said.
