Lawmakers talk more security, packing a gun after shooting

Scalise was shot in Alexandria, Virginia, where members of Congress were attending a practice for the GOP congressional baseball team.

The shooting appeared to be a "deliberate attack", congressional and law enforcement sources said.

Steve Scalise is the third-highest ranked member of the Republican leadership in the House, and has the hard job of trying to keep order in the fractious party ranks and rounding up votes for bills. His wounds were not believed to be life-threatening.

Congressman Ron DeSantis, who left just before the shooting, said as he walked to his auto, a man asked him if it was Republicans or Democrats practicing.

Davis said he and some fellow lawmakers fled the scene after hearing the gunshots.

"I was on my front porch and that is when I heard the first round of shots".

Scalise was fielding balls on second base when he was shot, Flake said. He said the gunman had "a rifle of some sort ... a lot of ammo".

James Hodgkinson, suspect in shooting at congressional baseball practice. His 10-year-old son was also on the field and dropped to the ground.

Rep. Steve Scalise, the majority whip, was one of the individuals shot.

In his whip campaign, he boasted about his conservative credentials and pointed out that he would be the only Republican leader from the South, which had a major role in giving Republicans their largest House majority in decades.

MedStar Washington said in a tweet on Wednesday afternoon that Representative Steve Scalise "was critically injured and remains in critical condition". He is in stable condition, according to his office. He said he grabbed Mr Scalise's phone to call his wife.

The alleged shooter was injured in a shootout with police, including two members of a dignitary protection unit of the U.S. Capitol Police.

Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent in charge Tim Slater said it was "too early to say" whether it was an act of terrorism, or whether Mr Scalise was targeted.

"I reject bigotry of all forms", Mr Scalise said then. Unless they're in leadership, members of Congress generally do not get a security detail.

"Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a true friend and patriot, was badly injured but will fully recover. Officers of the Capitol Police returned fire and ran towards the shooter, risking their lives while saving others", Rep. Joe Barton said in a statement.

After the shots subsided, he and others at the scene attempted to tend to Scalise's wound, while Brooks took off his belt and used it as a tourniquet for a bleeding staffer who had been shot in the leg.

The shots were reported on East Monroe Street in Del Ray, Alexandria police said on Twitter at 7:30 a.m. "It was scary", he told several reporters including the Washington Post.
