Pakistan PM Sharif to attend historical SCO Summit in Astana

China's Assistant Foreign Minister Li Huilai, during a media briefing, sidestepped a question on Afghanistan blaming Pakistan's intelligence agency for the recent bomb attacks in Kabul, saying China condemned the recent terrorist assaults in Afghanistan, Britain and the Philippines.

Citing the string of terror attacks that targeted Afghanistan, Britain, and the Philippines, Mr. Li stressed that a global consensus had been achieved that "the worldwide community had to jointly tackle terrorism".

She confirmed that the lengthy process of their admission into the group, which took years until China gave its nod, was over and the two countries would become full members at the grouping's summit to be held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, on June 8-9.

China stands willing to work together with other parties bilaterally and multi-laterally to fight terrorism.

India had backed out of the summit organised by Beijing in protest of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, which violates Indian sovereignty as it passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

"More and more countries have said they hope to become dialogue partners, observers or formal members of the SCO".

"China supports the NSG to have several consultations to reach a non-discriminatory and universally applicable solution to all the members of the NSG", he added.

Mr. Li stressed that China and India as "important neighbours" and "emerging market economies" are positioned to play global responsibilities. Pointing to the "multiple".

Their accession to the SCO will increase the organization's global impact and representativeness, Li said, adding that the cooperation potential and scope of the organization will be increased.

A senior Chinese diplomat said on Monday that President Xi Jinping's visit to Kazakhstan this week will help to advance bilateral ties and the development of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

The SCO now covers China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Speculation is also rife that Modi and Sharif may also meet on the sidelines of the summit.

BEIJING: China said Pakistan and India would become full members of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) by next week.
