Elton John bomb plot teenager jailed for life

Authorities arrested Syed previous year after he engaged online with British security service officers posing as a militant named Abu Yusuf.

Syed said he was considering targeting London's busy Oxford Street shopping district and searched online for potential locations, including an Elton John concert in Hyde Park on September 11, 2016.

His older brother Nadir had been previously arrested for a beheading plot linked to ISIS, and British media reports said Syed became radicalized after his sibling was jailed.

Despite the risk around the time of his brother's arrest, Syed, slipped through the net of the Prevent anti-radicalisation team although his passport was seized in 2015.

Syed had apparently become a follower of jailed Islamic religious leader Anjem Choudary, but the teen's attorney told the court Syed had now rejected those beliefs and condemned the recent attack at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester. He has now been sentenced to life behind bars for his plans to nail bomb an #Elton John concert in central London or other busy city areas.

He also met with an officer posing as Yusuf in a coffee shop in the small town of Slough, which was taped.

A task force thankfully baited Syed with fake contacts online, leading him to divulge his plans through social media and via mobile phone, telling them he meant to do "some damage with [a] machine gun" followed by an act of "martyrdom".

Syed unknowingly spoke to a police officer online and in person seeking assistance in sourcing weapons. On August 30 he arranged to pick up the weapons in exchange for £150 the following week.

He asked Abu Yusuf to make sure there were lots of nails in it and added: "I was thinking of Oxford Street. If I die, I die, you understand".

Syed was arrested in September previous year, when his electronic equipment was seized.

In a defence statement Haroon Syed said he was vulnerable because of his troubled family history, poor education, addiction to violent online video games and the imprisonment of his brother. His brother Nadir Syed was jailed previous year for planning to behead a member of the public in the street on Remembrance Sunday.
