Bortles losing the job

Bortles losing the job

After the game Coach Marrone refused to commit to Blake Bortles as his regular season starter. A top 10 fantasy signal caller in each of the past two seasons, Bortles is an atrocious QB in "real football" and may be out of a job sooner rather than later. You can't judge the eventual victor of a quarterback competition exclusively on what transpired in a Week 2 preseason game. Get the app and get the game.

"I need someone to lead this offense", Marrone said.

Coach Doug Marrone opened up the team's quarterback job after Bortles' latest inconsistent performance Thursday night, giving Chad Henne a chance to start.

"I'll approach it the same way", Bortles said. If Watson starts and fares well, it stands only to raise the question of whether he - and not RB L. Per ESPN Stats & Information, the Jaguars have three points in six series with Bortles on the field this preseason. What it likely means is that Henne is the starter unless Bortles magically turns a corner next Thursday against Carolina. But the Jaguars have gambled on Bortles rebounding, and so far it has been a big loser. However, the unit seemed to have a little more life with Henne.

The Jaguars picked up Bortles' fifth-year contract option this spring, which puts them on the hook for $19 million in 2018. The only other option would be to give 2016's sixth round pick Brandon Allen the keys to the offense. Johnson's PBU clinched the victory for the Buccaneers, although even a fluky last-second loss in the preseason wouldn't have diminished what Tampa Bay's first-teamers accomplished before halftime. The team's best receivers, such as Allen Robinson (whom Bortles missed badly twice Thursday), appear frustrated. Henne finished 6-of-10 for 44 yards in two drives. A change could be good for everyone involved. Many believe Kaepernick is essentially being shunned by NFL owners for fear of fan backlash following his national anthem protests last season, but Jacksonville may have to worry about some angry fans if it keeps putting Bortles under center. It's clear now that Khalil Mack at worst should have been the third overall selection in that class - behind Carr and Aaron Donald - and Oakland got Mack after Jacksonville passed on him two picks earlier.
