Jets announce Josh McCown as Week 1 starter

"There's a standard of play I want to achieve, and I'm looking forward to playing the best ball I've ever played", McCown said Monday. Petty is proving to be New York's most reliable signal caller entering 2017 and barring a setback, he is primed to step into the starting job sooner rather than later. The NFL journeyman was the odds on favorite to win New York's quarterback competition, but the decision was made up for Todd Bowles and Co. following Christian Hackenberg's poor play in the preseason and Bryce Petty's MCL sprain.

Bowles and Bates pointed to the experience of McCown, who is entering his 15th season and playing for his 10th National Football League team.

Bowles said the depth chart behind McCown is to be determined. And given that fact that McCown played in just one series during the team's first three preseason outings the Jets appear to be secure in McCown's past accomplishments. Now, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, McCown has been named the Jets' Week 1 starter. If a team needs to work on something, you work on it.

But, generally, starters don't play in the final preseason game and risk injury so close to the start of the season. "So there's people dealing with real-life issues, and so when you see that, I think the best thing you can when you can't be a part of it is go out and practice your tail off and enjoy the moments that you have and be thankful for that".

"Football is football", Bowles said. It doesn't matter whether it's for Thursday, whether it's next week, whether it's two weeks from now, it doesn't matter. "I feel like absolutely I'd be ready to go". After all, losing McCown to injury in the fourth preseason game would be both stupid and debilitating.

Bowles defended his strategy, saying he wanted to use the heart of the preseason to evaluate Hackenberg and Petty. And [if] we need to work on some things we'll work on them.

Based on experience, McCown was the presumptive starter from the outset, but the Jets gave Hackenberg an opportunity to steal the job. He has also participated in limited practice reps and Bowles has not announced if he will be playing in their preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday.
