PGA Championship moving to May could affect Whistling Straits

JORDAN SPIETH SALVAGED his round with two late birdies on the opening day of the PGA Championship.

Fifteen players were under par but the only major champions among them were John Daly, the 51-year-old American who won the 1991 PGA Championship and 1995 British Open, and world number one Dustin Johnson, both one-under par.

Deane made sporting headlines in 2006 when he was a shock victor of the made- for-television Trump Million Dollar Invitational, held on a Caribbean island.

He will not start favourite with many but the long hitting veteran Queenslander is a confidence player whose potential when he gets going is nearly limitless.

"Mr Trump was great. We're just not far enough along in our process to be able to say definitively where we are".

"He was incredibly gracious to me and everything I did, it was absolutely awesome". Video feeds saw the man on the ground and bloodied.

He is now the director of golf coaching at the University of Texas at Arlington.

The PGA of America confirmed Tuesday that its major championship is leaving the mid-summer date it has had for some 50 years.

Deane played in the 2014 event at Valhalla Golf Club in Kentucky and last month competed at Tour's Byron Nelson Classic, where he missed the cut.

Daly and Rucker have been pals for years, and the former Hootie and the Blowfish frontman sang on the title track of Daly's 2010 country album, "I Only Know One Way".

The PGA Championship begins today, and it will be a memorable one for one course marshal.

The European Tour's flagship event - the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth - typically is played the last week in May.

Spieth got off to a good start but struggled on his second nine. "Making the cut is realistic and finishing the top-50 is realistic, but I've got to do a lot of things right".
