Spelunky and Downwell creators team up for 50-game collection UFO 50

In recent weeks, he's been tweeting out images of untitled 8-bit games with the hashtag #UFO50.

The announcement trailer gives you a glimpse into some of the games that they're already working on (or maybe even finished). However, now he is back with UFO 50. "Our goal is to combine a familiar 8-bit aesthetic with new ideas and modern game design sensibilities".

Five indie developers are participating in the UFO 50 project that is being published by Spelunky creator Derek Yu, better known at Mossmouth. UFO 50 is a new game just announced today that's aiming to recreate the feel of those collections, although if all goes as planned it will pass on the wild quality variation. Yu developed the seminal (and widely influential) Spelunky, for instance, while Fumoto is the brains behind the similarly old-school action game Downwell. The project will include 50 full games that run the gamut of genres from side-scrolling shooters, platformers, puzzle games, dungeon crawlers and sports titles.

Also, the creators consider that players will need "hundreds of hours" before being able to finish all of the games in the compilation. What's more is that the games are connected in an overarching narrative, as the premise claims that they were all created by a secret company in the 80's that was ahead of its time. More news on other platforms will follow the release of the initial release of the title on PC.

All of UFO 50's games will feature a single-player mode, and roughly a third of them will offer multiplayer options as well, either in competitive or cooperative modes. No price nor an exact date has been announced.
