Contradicting Trump, DOJ Admits There Is No Evidence Of Trump Tower Wiretaps

"The FBI and Department of Justice have now sided with former Director Comey and confirmed in writing that President Trump lied when he tweeted that former President Obama "wiretapped" him at Trump Tower", American Oversight's Executive Director Austin Evers said in a statement.

"Just found out that Obama had my "wires tapped" in Trump Tower".

The Hill reports that the DOJ "confirmed in a court briefing filed late Friday that neither it nor the Federal Bureau of Investigation has evidence that Trump Tower was the target of surveillance efforts by the Obama administration during the 2016 presidential election".

[T] he Department of Justice - including NSD - has no records responsive to Plaintiff's request inasmuch as it seeks records of alleged wiretapping of then-Candidate Trump in Trump Tower by President Obama prior to the election, as referenced in the March 4, 2017, tweet.

There has been no acknowledgment by the president or his administration that Trump falsely accused Obama of wiretapping him.

The DOJ said "no such records exist" to back up Trump's explosive March 4 statements.

He further tweeted, "The first meeting Jeff Sessions had with the Russian Amb was set up by the Obama Administration under education program for 100 Ambs." adding, "Just out: The same Russian Ambassador that met Jeff Sessions visited the Obama White House 22 times, and 4 times previous year alone".

The White House dismissed the Friday filing as irrelevant.

The filing was in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit brought by American Oversight, a government watchdog group.

The DOJ document also makes clear that its response does not "confirm or deny" the existence of other records that might pertain to American Oversight's request that must be withheld due to national security concerns, including disclosing "intelligence sources and methods".

But Nunes said he was unsure whether the surveillance occurred at Trump Tower - as the president has suggested.

"With respect to the president's tweets", Comey said, "I have no information that supports those tweets".

This is apparently the first time that the Department of Justice has officially weighed in on the matter.

During a congressional hearing in March, then-FBI director James Comey said he knew of no evidence Trump Tower was wiretapped.

U.S. President Barack Obama (R) greets President-elect Donald Trump at inauguration ceremonies swearing in Trump as president on the West front of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S.

The motion said that the disclosure of the existence or nonexistence of other responsive records "would cause harm to national security" and is therefore exempted under the law.
