Federer, Nadal one step from dream semi

Federer, Nadal one step from dream semi

The legendary Swiss took the first set at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, 6-4.

Federer will face Juan Martin del Potro in the last eight as he continues his quest to secure a sixth US Open and 20th Grand Slam title of his career.

"Right now I would like to say that he achieves the so-called psychological stability as he has no fear for his next opponents", according to Olkhovsky.

Nadal, still stinging from a third-round upset by 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov in Montreal in August and with a spot in the semi-finals and a possible showdown with rival Roger Federer on the line, was fully focused on the task at hand.

Rublev is the youngest player to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open tournaments since US tennis star Andy Roddick in 2001. No man has won the U.S. Open without dropping a set in the Open era, which started in 1968.

In the fifth set, as the match stretched beyond 3 1/2 hours, del Potro broke in the last game when Thiem double-faulted.

Pliskova's progress to the quarter-finals enables the 25-year-old to stay in with a chance of keeping her world No 1 status with Garbine Muguruza, who was defeated by two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova on Sunday, and Elina Svitolina also fighting for the top ranking.

"I think I had quite high expectations, and obviously I knew I had quite an OK draw, so there was nobody, like, unbeatable for me", Pliskova said.

We will also have coverage of the World Tour Finals in November with every match live on Sky Sports.

In the women's quarterfinals, No. 1 Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic faces No. 20 CoCo Vandeweghe of the U.S., and 15th-seeded Madison Keys of the U.S. meets 418th-ranked Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, the first qualifier in the U.S. Open women's quarterfinals since Barbara Gerken in 1981.

But she couldn't mount any sort of comeback against Vandeweghe, who comes from a decorated athletic family and is finally making a name of her own this year. CoCo dropped to her knees and looked upward after match point, saying afterward she was thinking of her family.

"Rafa is the real champion and I am going to just try and enjoy it", Rublev said afterwards, who is looking ahead to facing one of his childhood idols.
