Paris awarded 2024 Olympics, Los Angeles to host 2028 Games

The International Olympic Committee has officially selected the host cities for both of the next two Summer Olympics, naming Paris to host 2024 and Los Angeles to host 2028.

Both Paris 2024 and Los Angeles 2028 officials expressed their excitement at the decision to award their cities the Olympic Games.

Swimming champion and four-time gold medalist Janet Evans is on the committee overseeing L.A.'s bid, and she joined the delegation in Peru. That city commissioned a poll showing 88 percent of its residents supported bringing the Olympics back to Southern California. "To understand the athletes needs, to take our existing infrastructure and make it even better". Paris 2024 bid co-chair Tony Estanguet said: "Paris 2024 is made for sharing". This paved the way for Paris as the sole 2024 bidder to win the Games unopposed.

That confirms what seemed more and more apparent this summer as the two cities vied against one another in the bid process for the 2024 Games.

"Despite the fact that the International Olympic Committee has awarded L.A. the bid to host the 2028 Summer Olympics, the fight isn't over", the NOlympics LA group said in a statement.

"This is a momentous day for the people of Los Angeles and the United States", said LA mayor Eric Garcetti.

International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach will visit LA at the end of the week, four days after the International Olympic Committee session in Lima ratifies the decisions for 2024 and 2028 on Wednesday.

"Together we must do everything in our power to ensure that Paris hosts a magnificent games in 2024".

Paris will site events across iconic venues, and will build an Olympic Village along the Seine River at Saint-Denis.

Los Angeles 2028 officials also celebrated the return of the Olympics to U.S. soil.

IOC President Thomas Bach embraced both cities' mayors on stage after a unanimous show of hands by IOC members ratified the awards.

This time, no unpleasant surprises for Los Angeles and Paris.

Paris last hosted the games in 1924.

Paris, with a Games budget of 6.8 billion euros ($8.09 billion), had failed with previous attempts to land the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

The outcome of this campaign was known since August, and the announcement of the american city not to ultimately aim for that 2028 after the principle of the double award was voted on by the IOC.
