Wyoming Loses Opener at Iowa, 24-3

The running game didn't do Allen many favors, as the Cowboys averaged 2 yards per carry. On the second, Allen kept the ball and got the first down.

Sophomore quarterback Nathan Stanley threw three touchdown passes in his first career start as Iowa knocked off Wyoming, 24-3, to open the season Saturday. Today didn't help his case. Wyoming was on the 36-yard-line and punting away to the Hawkeyes.

The first came at the end of an 11-play, 65-yard drive.

The blunder gave the Hawkeyes good field position and they quickly scored a touchdown to go up 14-3 before the half.

Zaleski, listed at a robust 6-5, 215 on the official Wyoming roster at gowyo.com, took the snap and then stepped up, dropped the ball. then things went wrong, very wrong.

Nate Stanley hit the Omaha South product for a two-yard completion on a play action pass with five minutes remaining in the game's first half. Stanley's third was a 45-yarder to Nick Easley. On the following play, Allen almost connected with Johnson on a deep pass in the endzone, but Johnson was just out of bounds after the play was reviewed. Wadley had 24 carries, most notably gaining 23 yards on a third-and-21 in the fourth quarter, while Nevada transfer James Butler finished with 47 yards on 10 carries.

Noah Fant caught two of the scoring strikes for the Hawkeyes (1-0) while the Iowa defense held the Cowboys to 59 yards rushing and picked off Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen, who is high on most National Football League draft boards next year, twice.

Stanley threw for 125 yards and three touchdowns. The Iowa linebackers combined for 38 tackles with Josey Jewell recording a game-high 14.

"I think the strength of our defense is up front right now, the front seven", Ferentz said. "One of the better ones I have seen in a long time".

The Pokes return to Laramie for their home debut against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs.
