The New York Yankees announced that Sonny Gray will start Game 1 of the AL Division series against the Cleveland Indians at 7:38 p.m. Thursday at Progressive Field.

Acquired from Oakland at the July deadline for a few upper-echelon prospects to help the Yankees' playoff push, Gray will face Cleveland's Trevor Bauer in the opener. But after the way Bauer pitched against the Yankees and down the stretch this season, the righthander probably didn't need any more information about his Game 1 opponent. Dating back to 1903, Boston has won eight World Series championships, most recently in 2013, good for fourth-most by any franchise. "We were in the early part of it", Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We know how good they are, so we have to go play our best".

The Yankees will start CC Sabathia in Game 2 against Kluber.

Not even the writers of the 1989 baseball classic "Major League" would have dreamed up "Wild Thing" Vaughn and the fictional Indians winning that many in a row.

"You're trying to get me to tell you what I'm going to do?"

In 27 starts overall this year for the Oakland A's and New York, Gray was 10-12 with a 3.55 ERA.

With the New York Yankees' 8-4 win over the Minnesota Twins, they have secured a trip to Cleveland. He went 5-0 with a 0.84 ERA in six September starts. Good enough to taunt their upcoming opponent, the AL's top dog in the Cleveland Indians. These are nearly identical to what the model had for the Chicago Cubs a year ago, as they had a 43% chance to reach the World Series and a 26% chance to end their championship drought. They hit some balls really hard.

While MLB has not had a team repeat as World Series champions since 2000, teams that make a World Series seem more apt to do it again, regardless of what happened in the regular season (see the San Francisco Giants in 2010, 2012 and 2014). He has a 9-5 record in 18 career postseason starts. St. Louis compiled a 4.01 ERA this season and a 4.08 mark in 2016 after producing a National League-best 2.94 in 2015. Didi Gregorius led the team by going 1 for 3 with a three run home run, while Aaron Judge added a two run blast and Brett Gardner added a solo homer.

"They've got a lot of guys who hit for power".

"None of that matters for this start", he said. The playoffs are a different animal and any team can beat you on any day. Mike Clevinger, who had a 3.11 ERA and 137 strikeouts in 121 2/3 innings, and Danny Salazar, who had the fourth-highest strikeout rate among all pitchers with at least 100 innings, will be available out of the bullpen.

The Indians are starting 17-game victor Trevor Bauer tonight against the Yankees.
